CHANDIGARH: A bee attack at Sukhna Lake triggered panic on Monday, forcing people to take protective action. A swarm of bees suddenly arrived from an unknown direction and settled on a tree trunk near the police post at the lake around 3 pm. Soon, it went after residents, sending them scurrying for cover. Many were stung but luckily no one required hospitalization.
A few visitors said strong winds had toppled a hive, causing the attack.
Police officials managed to control the limited visitors. Mini Bhardwaj, a sub-inspector posted at the Sukhna Lake police post, said, "Thankfully, it was not a weekend. We had blocked that area temporarily and opened it only after the officials from the environment department cleared it". Officials from the UT environment department were called to clear the hive. Within 30 minutes, normalcy was restored at the tourist spot. An environment department official said, "The attacks are more of a summer phenomenon when flowers bloom and bees tend to be on the move. But this swam had come from an unknown direction and we were caught unawares. The people were given full protection by the police and nobody was injured." Officials from the municipal corporation, which is supposed to handle such kind of incidents, refused to make any comments.
